The folks working on CarPlay at Apple really have thought of everything when it comes to rendering a gauge on a screen. The variations are shown here in this WWDC24 video. Also, it's cool to see Variable Fonts being utilized here. I forget it's not just a CSS thing.

WWDC24: Say hello to the next generation of CarPlay design system

It does make me wonder about reliability on the road. In the past, gauges were more directly connected to what they were reading, and if one broke, the rest would continue to work. If there's a connection fault with the screen, does everything break? My age is showing again.

The "gauge component" was a highlight for me. It must have taken ages to consider all those options and how they work together. Reading between the lines you can tell there's definitely an intention to put hidden guard rails for CarPlay. It's not a blank canvas, it's a carefully constructed playground.
